Stirring Trouble Internationally: Mongolia is a Place that’s Rich and Poor at the Same Time. Go Figure, Eh?

Wang Li writes from Ulaanbaatar: It’s cold in Mongolia this time of year. Where the hell is Mongolia, you ask. Peasants, what do you know about ancient cultures! Think of Genghis Khan and the best horsemen on the planet. The Mongols ruled half of Europe for two hundred years and they also held sway in parts of China. Japan, Russia and China tried to ‘swallow’ Mongolia in the early years of the last century but the Mongols survived as a sovereign state. So why does Mongolia matter? Well, it’s wedged between Russia and China and the funny thing is that ten times more Mongols live in Inner Mongolia in China than in the great nation itself. But of course China is not planning to let the two ‘Mongolias’ unite.
